Entertainment Weekly reveals pics and details for TLJ !
31st August 2017 |
In mid August, U.S entertainment magazine 'EW' revealed new pictures and articles - and a few gems - for Episode VIII : The Last Jedi ! The eight articles covered :
Luke's role and path ;
The importance of Rey's history ;
Finn and Rose's mission in the gambling city of Canto Bight on Cantonia ;
Meeting the porgs and the 'caretaker nuns' of Ahch-To ;
Supreme Leader Snoke's 'Praetorian Guard' ;
Poe Dameron's growing role as leader ;
Introducing Benicio del Toro's 'DJ' character, a mercenarial non-loyal computer slicer ;
A summary of an angry Kylo Ren, a vengeful Captain Phasma, a brief but useful Maz Kanata, and a grieving Chewbacca.
Most intriguingly, it's stated that Luke doesn't recognise Rey initially ; and that Kylo Ren's character arc - he's just killed his father, but then been bested by a novice Force-wielding desert scavenger - might become the most revealing and interesting.

Later in the month, it was revealed that Maz Kanata's (very) small role in TLJ is to point Finn & Rose towards Canto Bight City and seek out DJ, the computer slicer played by Benicio Del Toro. Originally, Maz's fate in TFA was that she journeyed with the Resistance Transport back to D'qar, but, akin to Obi-Wan's initial fate in ANH, she became a redundant character - and confusingly, since her early appearance in a trailer showed her handing Luke's lightsabre to Leia once on D'Qar ; we still need to know how she ended up owning that sword which had been lost in Cloud City ! |

Early toy and merchandise releases have been hinting at characters, locations, vehicles, and plot. We now know what the porgs will sound like thanks to this soft toy ! Furthermore, the packaging for Snoke's Mega Star Destroyer implies that both Rey and Finn (and possibly Poe) will be on board and engaged in battles ; however, many fansites noted that toy manufacturers and promotions aren't necessarily restricted to story accuracy. In addition, the Official Site revealed that not only is the Star Destroyer known as a 'Dreadnought', and is huge, with two massive dorsal rotating ground offence canons, but that the new Imperial / First Order gorilla-shaped Walker is called an 'AT-M6 (Mega-caliber Six) Walker'. |
|
In concurrent 'Young Han Solo' news, actor Michael Kenneth Williams seems to now be cut from the movie, since he was unable to commit to the new re-shoot schedule caused by the departure of Lord & Miller, and the replacement by Howard ; we also learn that his character was a "regal and wealthy warrior", who linked to Emilia Clarke's character, revealed to be called (or temporarily called) 'Kira'.

In rumour news, there was a flurry of activity concerning the possible Obi-Wan stand-alone movie, with British director Stephen Daldry now being linked to it.

For my illustrations for Episode VII : Plague of Doom I recently reviewed and listed all the remaining scenes... and had a minor heart-attack upon realising that, with several scenes requiring several 'shots', I still have a long way to go to complete this first fan-fiction ! However, it does re-focus my intention, though where I originally had the plan to illustrate Episodes VIII & IX with 'concept art' style panoramic pictures, I might now solely concentrate on completing the final 5-10% of the Episode IX script that remains. |
Returning to earlier in the Plague of Doom story, our heroes have just witnessed the brief hologram message from Princess Alana of Ondos, and both Han and Luke resolve to uncover the mystery unfolding before them : Han wants to rescue Lando and Chewie, while Luke finds himself drawn to the beautiful Princess. |
