The Last Jedi follow-up interviews....
31st January 2018 |
Following the release of The Last Jedi, oddly - and interestingly - a series of interviews have been released which appear to be possible 'damage control' on the backlash to Episode VIII. I enjoyed the film, more so after the very first viewing and the grudging acceptance of Rey's nondescript origins, but I still had my criticisms. Some appear to have been addressed by Rian Johnson and others :
Mark Hamill on Luke's direction
Rian Johnson on Luke's "exhausted" fate
Rian Johnson on the blocking out of the Rey - Kylo private dialogue
Editor Bob Ducsay acknowledges that Admiral Ackbar's fate could have been presented more clearly
Rian Johnson explains why Luke had a blue sword on Crait
Rian Johnson explains the absence of the Knights of Ren
Rian Johnson on 'new' Force powers like Leia's Force-flight and Luke's astral projection
I found all of these comments intriguing, illuminating, and justifying, but their very presence does make me wonder if they are indeed a clear retort to the virulent criticisms. As for my concerns, the 'product' is now 'out there', so I can only criticise in vain. But I've noticed it's causing me to re-evaluate my love and dedication to the direction of the Official Star Wars canon. Having spent over ten years formulating a Sequel Trilogy all be it in an 'immediate' timeframe, I cannot but help feel that my virtual edition Sequel Trilogy not only honours what went before but also moves it forward originally and within contextual expectations.
I think my primary criticism of The Last Jedi is that, by elevating a new character with intrigue and mystery, and within a franchised 'lore' of certain narrative structures, certain expectations were built and predicted. To have those then not follow-through has been difficult for me.
Second to that, as I've pondered it since the film's release, I believe that the 'macguffin' for TLJ is vacuous and hollow : the "new and unprecedented" hyperspace tracking might well have been foreshadowed by Vader's pursuit of Leia from Scarif to Tatooine in Episode IV......

A recent 'Star Wars Show' edition revealed a glimpse of a deleted scene - Rey running towards a camp on Ahch-To - and details about extra scenes to be found in the TLJ novelisation. |

In January there were some flurries of news pertaining to Solo. The young Lando Calrissian, Donald Glover, revealed a shot never seen before in a Star Wars film, that apparently Ron Howard was keen to introduce : a travelling shot moving from the outside of the Millennium Falcon up the boarding ramp and into the interior ! I'm hoping that this will be retained !
Although composer John Powell is crafting the score, it has been revealed that John Williams himself has produced a theme dedicated to Han Solo !
And at the end of January, a US cinema chain appears to have confirmed three locales for SOLO : Corellia, Mimban (from the first spin-off novel SPLINTER OF THE MIND'S EYE), and Kessel. We will have to wait to see if there are any more new worlds to visit !

In January, I was able to find time to finish a review of the full draft of the VE Episode IX Duel of the Fates, and to begin to re-insert the early scenes for Darth Monstross and his Sith cohorts. I know I'm biased, but this story - and this final chapter - has turned out to be a real cracker !! :o))
In addition, I included the new planets Crait and Cantonica from The Last Jedi in to my virtual edition Galaxy Map. Once again, I based their locations on my own judgement inspired by the tone and dialogue of the film : we get the impression that it's a fairly short jump from D'Qar to Crait, that Cantonica attracts the wealthy, and it is said that the stolen ship used by DJ, Finn, and Rose to return to the Resistance fleet is fast.... so that could allow us to place the casino world further away ?
