July 2014

UK's Puzzlewood & Ireland's Skellig island for Episode VII !
26th July 2014
Early in July, there was a sudden flurry of activity and accompanying interest at the Forest of Dean's Puzzlewood forest in Gloucestershire. As it happens, this is only about 45 minutes drive from where I live, and it's a lovely 'magical' and seemingly 'old' forest, primarily made up of trees and undergrowth growing in and around sinkholes. The site has been used for UK television productions like Doctor Who and Merlin, as well as for the Hollywood movie, Jack the Giant Slayer. Subsequently, amongst the winnebago trailers and support vehicles, stuntmen and crew were seen carrying wooden swords, and at least one extra spotted wearing white boots.
If one recalls the fan-rendered reported concept art as described here, then we might have a "tree-snow-capped forest" (?!) as a setting for a "lightsabre duel between a Jedi and a Sith" !
And later in the month, reports started appearing that the new movie would utilise an Atlantic island off the Irish coast in the last week of July. This island is a world heritage site, and is home to unusual beehive shaped stone dwellings that were associated with a long-abandoned monastery.

On July the 6th, two newcast members were announced, following the open casting call last year. Semi-professionals Crystal Clarke and Pip Andersen have now joined the production, with the latter noted for his impressive skill at 'parkour', a feat of freefall gymnastics and aerobatics !

In the middle of July, Episode VII director J.J. Abrams took the opportunity to release a new video updating the progress of the 'Force for Change' charity campaign. As with the first one from Abu Dhabi, this one from Pinewood revealed the new 'X-Wing Fighter' design, but the observant have noted the McQuarrie influence, as well as the fact that the ship foils appear to be fixed in one plane.

Later in the month, the UK's BBC bagged an on-the-spot interview with Mark Hamill no less, at a movie premiere in London. Without revealing any details, he warmly praised the new younger generation of actors, and showed off his "contracturally-obliged" beard !

Meanwhile, the aerial dogfight above the stoney desert of Kessel continues to blaze away in our Virtual Edition of Episode VII : Plague of Doom !
As dusk falls, Jedi Elder Master Gri San Wei directs two of the Jedi students in their Mon Cal Coraller starfighters to rely on the Force....
Master Gri San Wei directs his wingmen to let the Force guide them
.... and one of the wingmen, Jaxx, confirms that although his ship is shaking and the diagnostic read-outs are warning of imminent failure, he intuitively knows he can push his ship that little bit further....
Jedi padawan Jaxx pushes his starfighter to the limit !
Our pilot Jaxx is a subtle homage to the 'big green rabbit' Jaxxon of the MARVEL comics of the late 1970s that immediately followed the story arc of A New Hope :o)
You can see the VE artwork in the 'Kessel' art gallery as well as in the online illustrated story, and you can discuss this in the forum here !
