Episode III rumours ... or early spoilers ??
27th October 2002
Fan site Episode-X.com has recently updated with Episode III production rumours, though the final one echoes a similar rumour heard during the production of Attack of the Clones.
  • Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn is said to make a    re-appearance.

  • The Jedi Starfighter will be re-modified as Anakin's own starship.

  • The sets used for Tipoca City on the waterworld of Kamino have been marked for use for Episode III.

  • The history of the Millenium Falcon would be revealed in Episode III, and we will understand why Han Solo has a fondness for the Falcon.

  • Echoing a similar report from a year or so ago, a single catastrophic event will explain how the galaxy changes from what we recognise now, to what it will become in 20 years' time.
  • As the latest round of Star Wars magazines appear around the world, we hear that Pre-Production is well under way with Gavin Bocquet and Trisha Biggar involved in set and costume concept design, while George Lucas and Rick McCallum are meeting weekly with the small art department team. Location scouting will focus between october and december.

Episode III : Jar Jar's role.
    20th October 2002
As proposed on the 3rd of October, I intend to discuss and outline the 'paths' that remain for certain Prequel Trilogy characters. Today, I want to focus on the Gungan Senator, Jar Jar Binks.
In The Phantom Menace, the bumbling Gungan was introduced for two reasons : as a plot device and as a mythic archetype. The latter is something that George Lucas is well aware of, for he has studied such archetypes and looks to Joseph Campbell's work for inspiration - the result is what makes the Star Wars appeal so universal !
With Jar Jar Binks, Lucas is illustrating the naive innocent, the one who never has any friends and is always making the wrong decisions, always breaking things. Yet, even this 'projection' can make amends, for it is his off-the-cuff remark to Queen Amidala that sets in motion the breaking of the Seige of Naboo. And Master Jedi, Qui-Gon Jinn, fore-saw the potential in the "pathetic lifeform" where his own padawan could not.
Ten years later and the Republic is clearly on the verge of calamity. Jar Jar has helped to bring the Naboo and the Gungans together in peace, and now serves as co-representative in the Galactic Senate. Although he has a smaller role in this episode, it is no less pivotal. Ever the naive innocent, too trusting for his own good, he perhaps reflects the Republic in this re-active stance. When Chancellor Palpatine insidiously suggests that only the absent Senator Amidala could save the Republic, he knows that Jar Jar's good intentions will deliver.
Now that Emergency Powers have been granted to the Chancellor, what might happen to the instigator ? Might the Gungan repent ? Will the Republic recognise the subtle treachery for what it is and accuse him ? Will he continue to serve Amidala and the Jedi ... or will he, once again, unwittingly bring harm upon them ? In Episode III, will his actions be pivotal ? As the naive Republic disappears, how will its naive citizen fare ?

Episode III : full of questions.
    3rd October 2002
At the close of Episode II : Attack of the Clones, with the recollection of the four other parts of the Star Wars Saga, you would think that the plot for Episode III was a done deal. But we couldn't be further from the truth. In many ways, Episode III remains an enigma and a paradox !
Of course, we know that Chancellor Palpatine will declare himself Emperor of his Imperial New Order ; we know that all but two of the Jedi will disappear ; we know Anakin Skywalker becomes the new Sith Lord, Darth Vader ; and we know that his children, the Twins, Luke and Leia, will be born in this final hour of darkness.
But these are merely the broad brush strokes of story direction. Each episode so far has had an engaging plot, that drives the almost secondary drama of the Skywalker family. What excitement might we expect to see unfold on the silver screen in 2005 ? What will be the "macguffin" that introduces the players ? And how will George Lucas involve certain characters that have played a primary role thus far ?
Lucas has said that the Clone Wars, now two years old, will be resolved in the first half of the movie, after which it becomes a human drama between Obi-Wan, Anakin, Padmé Naberrie, and Palpatine. Will Kyber be involved this final time ? Will Alderaan be a significant location ? How will the Separatists, and, in particular, the Prequel Trilogy villains, the greedy Trade Federation, affect the turn of events ?
In the coming updates, I intend to outline the paths of Padmé, Jar Jar, and Count Dooku, the Sith Lord, Darth Tyranus.
In the meantime, however, the Virtual Edition can offer a fan driven glimpse at what might come to pass ! Based on ideas drawn together from the VE discussion forum, a plotline has been sketched out, and is currently being illustrated.
