Reviewing ANDOR's progress
31st October 2022 |
Eight episodes of ANDOR have now aired, and we have been shown some backstory for Cassian, and followed his (mis)adventures on his adopted home planet of Ferrix and, caught up in Luthen Rael's rebel cause, his further mission in liberating a payroll from the Imperial garrison on Aldhani. Unfortunately for Cassian, a successful and rewarding heist ultimately brought the Imperial ISB investigations to Ferrix and, by ironic coincidence, his own innocent arrest and imprisonment by heavy-handed Imperials.... draconian and fascist precisely because of the attak on the garrison !
Meanwhile, on Coruscant, Mon Mothma is becoming more and more isolated politically and is struggling to secretly divert any more funds to her friend, Luthen's, cause. The latter has been revealed as an edgy hard-nosed rebel cell coordinator on the periphery of galactic society, while equally adept at masquerading as an historic curios collector and dealer on the galaxy's Capital Planet. Interestingly, it appears his wife might actually be the inspiring force behind him.
Of the Imperials, ISB supervisor Dedra Meero is like a dog with a bone as she tenaciously unravels the connections between recent thefts of Imperial military hardware, the garrison heist, and Cassian Andor himself. Initially, one found oneself 'rooting' for her to succeed against the predominant male oppression of the 'office', but now we are seeing a darker, crueller side to her. The unseated security supervisor, Syril Karn, from Morlana, has now returned home to the depths of Coruscant and to his domineering mother. He is able to find re-employment, but his own private searches for Andor, following his singular run-in with the proto-rebel on Ferrix, has come to the attention of Dedra.
I still find the pacing a little too slow and very verbose for a recognisable 'Star Wars show', though I acknowledge that the long-form TV format lends itself to a a more experimental approach than a 2-2 1/2 hour movie that needs to punch across its message and plot and characters far more succinctly. But, interestingly, the structure, by and large, seems to follow trilogies, and the climactic episodes all seem to be tensely exciting and well edited ! There's a fine line between developing a plot over a low simmer and meandering ideas at a turgid pace. Online, the concerns about pace seem to have divided the fan community, and I admit that remains my one alarm over a richly visualised and conceptually experimental show ; I suppose, if all the episodes had matched the tense rhythm of the closing arc episodes, then I would be much happier.

The illustrated virtual edition of Episode VII : Plague of Doom continues, and Commander Kane, speaking aboard his Star Destroyer, assures the Second Emperor, Mas Amedda, that the attack strike of the mind control gas droids is about to commence. Amedda warns Kane of dire consequences if his trust in his commander, following the delays, is lost.
